Monmouth College Announces Enrollment for New Academic Year
With its enrollment figure for the 2008-09 academic year confirmed, Monmouth College experienced another strong admission year and is already looking ahead to greater success, according to dean of admission Christine Johnston.

The college welcomed 425 first-time students in August, including 383 first-time freshmen, which puts the school’s overall enrollment at 1,328 students. Monmouth hopes to gradually build on that total in the next few years, eventually capping enrollment at approximately 1,500. Johnston is optimistic that the goal can be achieved.

"This next year, we're going to make a real push for out-of-state students," she said. "We've got a couple of exciting initiatives we're going to get off the ground in the months ahead."

Continuing to look at the next entering class, Johnston reports that key indicators, such as applications and campus visits, are higher at this point than they were for the college's largest incoming class of a year ago, and prospective student inquiries are up significantly over the last two years.

She and her staff are also anticipating a large turnout for Monmouth’s first open house of the fall semester on Sept. 27, which coincides with the college's Family Weekend. Prospective students can also attend similar events this fall on Oct. 13, Oct. 25, Nov. 8, Nov. 11 and Dec. 6. Individual visits can be scheduled on Mondays through Saturdays by calling 1-800-74-SCOTS.

"By visiting campus, students are able to spend the majority of the day on campus," said Johnston. "They can hear about one or more academic majors, take a tour of campus and meet many members of the Monmouth College family."

In other admission department news, Johnston has added a recent Monmouth graduate to her staff. Ian Van Anden, who earned his degree in May, began his position as an admission representative during the summer. A history and communications major from Sykesville, Md., Van Anden served as editor of the student paper. He was named Monmouth's Senior Man of the Year by the Monmouth chapter of Blue Key Honor Society, a national organization recognizing upperclassmen for outstanding character and ability and distinction in service, leadership and scholarship.
