| Flood Warnings and Watches, Warning for Spoon River Until Tuesday |
Updated 11:37 a-m
Rain that hasn't let up since Friday is prompting the National Weather Service to issue flood warnings and watches, and state police have closed Interstate 280 in the Quad Cities. Two local reporting stations measured between 3.63 and 4.17 inches as of 5:45 Sunday morning, and as of that same time, rainfall just for Sunday had totaled between 45-hundredths and 64-hundredths of an inch. The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for Knox and Fulton Counties, and the rest of the area remains under a flash flood watch.
The weather service indicates the area could receive an additional 2 to 4 inches of rain Sunday on top of what had already fallen between Friday and Saturday. The flood warning is in effect until 4:45 p-m Sunday. The flash flood watch is effective until 7 p-m Sunday. In addition, a flood warning is in effect for the Spoon River, affecting Knox and Fulton Counties, until Tuesday morning. The rain has caused flooding in the Quad Cities, and state police have shut down Interstate 280. Authorities say westbound I-280 traffic has to get off at exit 15, or the Milan exit. Eastbound traffic is being detoured at the Illinois Route 92 exit. Traffic can go in either direction on Route 92 once exiting the interstate. The weather service reminds motorists to never drive vehicles into areas where the water covers the roadway. Vehicles can easily be swept away by standing water, and authorities remind people that most flood-related deaths occur in automobiles.
