WGIL Selected as National Award Finalist; Winners Announced This Week
WGIL listeners and staff members will learn Thursday night if the station receives the highest honor in the radio industry. The National Association of Broadcasters will honor radio's finest stations and personalities at its annual Marconi Radio Awards. This year's event is in Austin, Texas.

WGIL is one of five stations nationally that were selected by the NAB in July as finalists for the Marconi Award for Small Market Station of the Year. The Small Market Station category is for stations outside the top 150 rated radio markets, made up of communities with a market population of about 297,000 people or less. A total of 21 awards will be given in different categories for all market sizes.

Established in 1989 and named after inventor and Nobel Prize winner Guglielmo Marconi, the NAB Marconi Radio Awards are given to radio stations and outstanding on-air personalities to recognize excellence in radio and are considered by broadcasters to be the most prestigious award and highest honor given in the radio broadcast industry.

WGIL General Manager Roger Lundeen stated, "I am very proud of this great accomplishment, and would like to congratulate our staff for their commitment to excellence and their dedication in providing our community with high quality local radio. I would also like to thank our listeners, advertisers, and community organizations for their support and giving us the opportunity to serve and inform our community. These things have enabled us to become a finalist for this highly prestigious award. Here at the station, we're proud that Galesburg is receiving some national attention in our industry and are excited to be among the five finalists for the NAB Marconi Radio Award."

WGIL was selected as a finalist for the same award in 2000, and WGIL's Terry Cavanaugh was honored with the Marconi Award for Small Market Personality of the Year in 2004.

The Illinois Broadcasters Association also selected WGIL as the 2008 Small Market Station of the Year at their annual awards dinner held at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield in June.
