Local Lawmaker Reaction to Son's Homecoming
He said he didn't really want the day to be about him, but a local lawmaker says he was overwhelmed when his son returned home Friday from a four-month tour-of-duty in Afghanistan.

Tech Sergeant Justin Moffitt returned to Knox County Friday after serving with the 182nd Airlift Wing in Afghanistan. His father is State Representative Don Moffitt, who says he appreciates the welcome home everyone gave his son, who was part of a caravan from Peoria to Galesburg, with a stop in Knoxville along the way.

But Moffitt says for him, the message goes far beyond a simple "Welcome Home."

"When you welcome one soldier back, you're thanking all soldiers, all that have served and are serving...and we really can't tell our soldiers enough and their families how much we appreciate their service."

Moffitt says it was hard not to think about his son, partly because one of his House colleagues, Jacksonville Republican Jim Watson, also served in the war on terror through much of that same period. He said every time he saw Watson's empty chair in Springfield, not only did he think about Watson, he also thought about his own son.
