Salvation Army Officially Has New Home
A need for a lot more space will soon result in the local Salvation Army chapter moving up the street.

The Salvation Army Monday closed on the $225,000 purchase on what is now the former Calvary Assembly of God Church at Kellogg and Grove Streets; they'll soon start moving there from their current location at 320 North Kellogg.

Salvation Army Captain Rick Ray tells WGIL the purchase of the church will work out well for his organization for a number of reasons. "The utility expenses weren't much different to operate that for a year...than what we are running now," Ray said. "It seemed like it was a good transition, and the price was right there, where this money we had stored up in our capital (fund), was pretty close to the same amount."

Ray says about three-hundred-thousand dollars had been in that capital account, which was initially started in 1990. They've been in their current location since 1972, and Ray says it will be great to have a much bigger home for their services and other programs they provide, which should be ready by January.

Construction has begun on a new Calvary Assembly of God Church location on North Linwood Road; the congregation will be meeting at the old Sandburg Mall Theatre in the interim.
