SOS Workers Ordered to Take Four Days Off Unpaid
More state government workers will be taking time off, without pay. It's part of the response to the governor's budget cuts.

The Illinois Secretary of State's Office has sent letters to its workers, saying the office has decided to go with furlough days, rather than layoffs or facility closures. Spokesman Dave Druker says that doesn't mean layoffs are completely off the table, but says furlough days mean a much less chance of any further action. "The major way we're proposing to do this is to ask our employees, approximately 3,900 people, to take four furlough days, two of which would be done before Jan. 1, and then two of which would be taken before June 30 of next year," he said.

Even Secretary Jesse White will take the four days off.

Other constitutional officers and state agencies are using some combination of layoffs, furlough days, and early retirement incentives to handle the budget cuts, implemented by Gov. Rod Blagojevich when he said the budget was more than $2 billion in the hole.
