Farmers Choose Schock Over Former Farm Broadcaster
A leading Illinois farm group is endorsing the Republican running for a seat in Congress representing a portion of Knox County, and not his opponent, a former longtime farm broadcaster.

Activator -- the political action committee that's part of the Illinois Farm Bureau -- has endorsed Peoria Republican Aaron Schock for the 18th Congressional seat being contested in November, over Colleen Calahan.

Schock says the recently-approved Federal Farm Bill was the best one Congress could get, even though it was flawed. "I think that we have a responsibility to ensure some safety net," Schock said. "And as I talk to farmers, many of them want a safety net; they don't necessarily want a subsidy when prices are high, because that usually results in higher cash rents, and gets passed on to the landowners and not necessarily the producers of the commodities."

Schock says he'd like to see more than just the 10-percent ethanol-blended fuel currently available to consumers; he says he'd like to see it go up to 15 to 20-percent.

When asked, a farm bureau committee member didn't give too many specifics on why Schock was picked over Callahan or Green Party candidate Sheldon Schaefer -- just that they though Schock would do a better job advocating for farmers in Congress.
