IDOT Offers Fuel-Saving Tips
The Illinois Department of Transportation is offering tips on reducing fuel consumption. IDOT has printed 15,000 fuel conservation brochures, which are available at all of Illinois' rest stops.

IDOT spokesman Mike Claffey says the brochure includes information about proper tire inflation, proper car maintenance and reducing driving speeds. Claffey says reducing speed alone can save up to 15 percent on fuel consumption.

In order to reduce its own fuel consumption, IDOT reduced the amount of mowing along highway rights-of-way this summer and by cutting back on unnecessary travel. IDOT employees now utilize video conferencing and car pooling to conserve.

Claffey says the conservation efforts will help come winter. Although IDOT is not expecting as harsh a winter as last winter, any conservation efforts made now will help fuel supplies in the winter.
