Winter Heating Bills Expected to Rise Again
Customers of one of the area's electricity providers will have to dig deeper into their wallets this heating season.

Ameren and Nicor are both predicting increases of 20 to 25 percent over last year's heating prices.

Ameren vice president of public relations Stan Odgen says the utility is trying to get the word out so there won't be any surprises when the cold weather hits.

"We have issued press releases in both May and August on the, uh, on the expected winter gas prices."

Officials with the utilities blame higher worldwide demand for energy, which has driven up market prices of both petroleum and natural gas. Natural gas prices could also be affected by unforeseen events, like recent hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico.

The utilities are encouraging customers to budget now for winter heating costs.
