Questions Over Autisim Insurance Bill in Springfield
A measure before state lawmakers moved quickly through the Illinois Senate this week, but it looks like any momentum will be lost now that the measure heads to the House.

The proposal, which would require $36,000 worth of Autism health care coverage in health insurance policies, passed the Senate by a vote of 47-6. But the debate included some barbs. Republicans pointed out that the state's own All Kids health care plan doesn't cover these services.

State Sen. Dave Syverson (R-Rockford) said, "If we have more children covered under All Kids than we do under small employers, wouldn't it make sense for us to take this out? Let's amend this and let's make sure that all kids get the important coverage that they need."

But Sen. Rickey Hendon (D-Chicago) yelled back, "Just be honest and say you don't give a damn about the kids who have autism."

This bill has to pass the House, which isn't coming back until Nov. 12.
