Special County Audits Removed From County Board Agenda; Board Chair Criticized Published Report
What was to be the biggest issue of the night at the Knox County Board meeting, turned out to be the biggest non-issue of the night.

The contract of the auditors employed by the county to conduct an investigation into the finances of the State's Attorney and Sheriffs' Offices under their previous administrators was supposed to be the hot topic at the meeting; but following a hour long closed door meeting, the board decided to strike several items relating to the services from Carpentier, Mitchell, and Goddard off the agenda, including paying a $34,000 price tag. At the end of the meeting, Board Chairman Allen Pickrel publicly voiced his current and ongoing support of the audit, and criticized a published report which is believed to have claimed otherwise.

The board did decide to hold a public forum next month on what to do with the aging courthouse, following recommendations from an engineering firm that suggested upwards of $20 million in renovations, including the building of an addition.

The board members also discussed the county's annual contribution to the Galesburg Regional Economic Development Association. Some members suggested at the next meeting to vote on lowering its contribution to GREDA in order to save money, and because the were very critical of the benefit that the program brings back to the local area. One board member says that as a taxpayer and a citizen of Galesburg, GREDA 'does nothing' for the city and that a 'message needs to be sent'.
