Knoxville School District Deficit Budget Approved
It looks like there will be a huge deficit in part of the budget for the Knoxville School District, but the superintendent says he doesn't think there will be.

The District-202 School Board Wednesday night voted to approve the budget for the current school year, which shows roughly $12 million in expenses, but only $9 million in revenues. Superintendent Larry Carlton says the biggest deficit -- almost three-million dollars, comes from the district's Fire, Prevention, and Safety Fund.

But Carlton says essentially, what looks like a deficit is really deceiving. "We received all our (Life Safety) funds last year on bond sales," Carlton said. "We won't have that this year. This year, there will be no revenue, but we will have all the expenditures paying for all our life safety items."

All of District-202's buildings saw some sort of remodeling work over the summer, from heating and air conditioning to improvements at Jensen Gym.

Carlton says of more concern is a projected $280,000 dollar deficit in the district's Education Fund, which he believes won't be there at all by the time the school year ends.

The District-202 Board Wednesday night selected Discovery Depot Childrens Museum Executive Director Darcy Thorp to replace the resigned Troy Marquith on the board.
