Handbook for Illinois Graduation Driver's License Avaiable from SOS
The Illinois Secretary of State's Office is introducing a new guidebook that spells out the rules for the new graduated driver's license.

Teenage drivers are first issued a learner's permit for nine months, during which time parents must observe and instruct the teens during at least 50 hours of practice driving, including 10 hours at night. The previous three-month learners permit requirement in many cases eliminated winter driving for the teens preparing to get their license.

Secretary of state's office spokesman Henry Haupt says there is a lot to like about the state's graduated driver's license system.

"We're really pleased with the role parents are playing...this is an important partnership. Statistics show the new law really is working. In Illinois in the first six months of 2007, 82 teens were killed in automobile crashes. During the same time period in 2008, 39 teens have lost their lives."

Haupt calls the guide a blueprint for parents. It's available at all secretary of state drivers services facilities, and online at cyberdriveillinois.com.
