Knox College Graduate Honored by Journalism Peers
A Knox College graduate and former Register-Mail reporter is about to retire from his current role in education, but not before receiving an award from the state's broadcast journalists.

Mike Lawrence is the director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, and recently received "Illinoisan of the Year" honors from the Illinois News Broadcasters Association, of which WGIL is a member.

Lawrence had harsh words for the current Gubernatorial administration, and called on journalists, even in the face of incredibly shrinking newsrooms, to do more to expose government for what it is.

"You need to do a better job of educating the people of Illinois in ways that bring these challenges home to them. You need to do a better job in spearing the political bull."

Lawrence is referring to references made during the state budget crisis to how lawmakers want the public to believe that things like budget cuts will help bring more money into the state budget.

He says he believes only increases in the state income tax will do that.
