Combatting Domestic Violence by Candlelight
Knox County residents continue a message that, unfortunately, gets unheeded all too often: domestic violence has to stop.

Safe Harbor Family Crisis Center hosted their 16th annual Take Back the Night Rally at Knox College's softball diamond Tuesday night. They used the venue because the theme they picked this year: "Safe at Home."

A woman we'll only identify as Andrea spoke at the rally; she, herself, was a victim of domestic violence, and says she walked out the door into a lot of uncertainty. "I had exactly $6 to my name, and I was a stay-at-home mother, and a full-time student, and I didn't know what I was doing," Andrea said. "Thanks to him, I also had a broken-out car window that he punched as I was trying to leave the driveway. I went to Safe Harbor, and I learned that I wasn't alone, first of all, and that what I was going through, a lot of other people, unfortunately, also went through."

Andrea says for her, it took strength and courage to end her abusive relationship, not to mention perseverance, especially when you might think it would be okay to reconcile and start the relationship over.

T-Shirts Safe Harbor clients designed explaining their feelings were on display during the rally, and a candlelight vigil was held as well, officially kicking off Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
