Special License Plate for Fallen Police Officers
Legislation proposed by a local state lawmaker that would provide benefits to families of police officers killed in the line of duty through the sale of special license plates is now law.

74th District State Representative Don Moffitt sponsored the measure that will provide scholarships to children and spouses of fallen police officers. The money to pay for the death benefits would come out of the newly created Illinois Police Association fund.

Moffitt says the money can be used for undergraduate and graduate study. "This is one of those things you hope is never used," Moffitt said. "Yet, the reality is that we know there are times. So I was honored to carry this for the Police Association. This gives them the revenue to create this death benefit."

The legislation passed both Houses in May and was sent to Governor Rod Blagojevich in June, and he signed the measure into law last month.

The measure, which goes into effect January 1st, allows the secretary of state to issue license plates for the Illinois Police Association. The plates will cost 25 dollars on top of the regular registration fee.
