Galesburg Veterans Memorial Nets Governor's Award
A project that was very near and dear to one Galesburg alderman has landed the city with a special award.

Sixth Ward Alderman Wayne Allen says he was notified Thursday afternoon that the city had received the Governor's Home Town Pride Award for the year-old veterans memorial that's been built at Lincoln Park.

Allen tells WGIL the memorial has bricks with the names of 1,700 local veterans of various wars, and believes that's the most unique part of the display. "We have so many World War Two Veterans, and we still receive (applications for bricks) every day. I just received another order (Thursday)," Allen said. "And, not only World War Two veterans, which didn't have a place like that, but it's for every veteran. We're happy every time we get a new name."

Allen says there are plenty of people that deserve credit for the city receiving the Home Town Pride award, from local business Lackey Monument for designing and doing a lot of work on the actual monument, to those who did the electrical work on it.

Allen says other than a plaque and some signage, there isn't really an award. But he says having a place in town to honor veterans is its own reward.
