Federal Student Aid Form Much Easier to Fill Out
A bill signed into law by the president will make it easier for college students applying for federal student loans.

The bill, sponsored by U.S. Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Chicago), shortens the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA).

The old form is six pages long and is composed of over 100 questions. Emanuel says the new form is just two pages in length and has about half the number of questions.

"I always said if you could fill [the FAFSA form] out, you didn't have to go to college, you could go directly to graduate school," Emanuel said jokingly to a crowd in Chicago . "The FAFSA form for student aid will be cut in half and will be done in consumer-friendly English."

Officials with the Department of Education say the new form was not available for college students who applied for aid this school year. The hope is to have the FAFSA-EZ form in place by Jan. 1.
