At Least One Railroad Grade Separation Close to Reality in Galesburg
The City of Galesburg appears poised to make sure that keeping both rail and vehicle traffic moving at all times is, if not close to, priority number one.

City Manager Dane Bragg told the City Council during their second goal-setting workshop Monday night that the city is just a couple million dollars away from having all the funding needed for a railroad overpass at the North Seminary Street crossing.

Bragg says, however, it appears that thanks to another year without a capital bill from the state, the proposed East and West Main Street railroad grade separations are getting farther and farther away -- but saving might not be a bad idea.

"If we can put some money (in the bank), even if we can't raise all the money locally, it shows that we have a match amount, to match state and federal grants," Bragg said. "To be able to show that commitment in a grant application is great as well. It really helps our changes out in actually getting the grant. So, I think (saving) is a very wise choice."

Bragg says even though there are a lot of attainable goals on the list, some of which have been carried over from previous years, he thinks it would be best to focus on some of the major projects being done, like the construction of the new Oquawka water treatment plant and the rehabbing of the city's local water system, among other things.

A draft budget should be before the council, Bragg says, around mid-October. The fiscal and calendar year are the same for the city.
