United Way of Knox County Fundraising Campaign Starts Monday
An annual fund drive organizers say is crucial now more than ever given the state of the economy and the state's inability to fund social service agencies officially begins Monday.

The United Way of Knox County uses Labor Day to kick off its annual campaign. Executive Director Ann Tucker says this year's goal is $370,000 -- $10,000 more than last year, but doable, she says, since last year's goal was exceeded by about that amount.

Tucker tells WGIL the two-dozen partner agencies and their almost three-dozen programs are under great strain right now, which is why every dollar given counts.

"A lot of these agencies have had to wait for a long time to find out if they're even having any money coming from the state," Tucker said. "One program -- the Knox County Area Project -- just recently found out they have a contract. It's not 100% of what they got last year, but it's enough now to keep them afloat."

Tucker says many of the partner agencies, when filling out their applications for funding this year, have almost had to guess how much money they would need from the United Way.

The fundraising campaign technically started last week with the solicitation of business and employee donations called "Pacesetters."

The public portion of the fund drive continues through the end of the year, and you can find out more information by CLICKING HERE.
