Groups Get Census-Related Grants
Community groups are getting grants worth $1.2 million to try to get everyone counted in next year's census.

The money comes from the Joyce Foundation, which works on public policy in the Great Lakes area. Foundation President Ellen Alberding says it will be used to turn up individuals in traditionally under-counted demographics: low-income people, African-Americans, Asians, Latinos, immigrants and children.

The community groups are trusted within their communities, and can help find un-counted people, educate them about the census and allay any fears that have about census participation in ways that census enumerators sometimes can't.

The census determines congressional representation, and is also used to distribute federal funds for a variety of programs. Researchers estimate that Illinois would not get $12,000 over the next decade for each person who lives here but isn't counted.

The Joyce Foundation received 79 proposals for grants to boost census turnout, and approved 26 grants, which will involve 60 community groups across the state

Communities targeted are Aurora, Berwyn, Chicago, Cicero, Danville, East St. Louis, Elgin, Harvey, Joliet, Peoria, Romeoville, Springfield, and Waukegan.
