Group: No Child Left Behind Standards are Low
The standards Illinois schools must meet to comply with the No Child Left Behind Act are low, according to a group that studied the matter.

The Thomas B. Fordham Institute, which presses for accountability in education, studied 28 states, and found Illinois' standards are 23rd hardest - or sixth easiest.

This is a problem, says Mike Petrilli, the institute's vice president for national programs and policy, because the public is led to believe that students who pass the proficiency tests are being prepared for college or a job, when in fact the test is not a good indicator.

Under the act, schools are required to demonstrate "adequate yearly progress" toward full proficiency by 2014, or face sanctions. The states set the standards, however, and are in no hurry to impose standards that their students will not meet.

Petrilli says Congress and the Obama Administration will consider national standards.
