Orpheum Funding Request Comes Before City Council
It's been three months since leaders from Galesburg's Orpheum Theatre first wrote a letter to the Galesburg City Council asking for matching dollars in support of a federal grant application, and now, aldermen are apparently ready to act on that request.

The Galesburg City Council Monday night will consider a request from the Orpheum for $100,000 which will help the theatre be eligible for the federal "Save America's Treasures" grant that would be used for a myriad of repairs.

Orpheum president Kate Francis, in a letter dated June first to the city council, first made the request, citing increased theatre attendance, the theatre's roll in the community, and other things as reasons the matching funds should be given.

The Carl Sandburg College Board of Trustees two weeks ago agreed to give $50,000 and is working on an agreement to use the theatre for performances and possibly graduation ceremonies.

And Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza told WGIL in an exclusive interview he will ask aldermen to support the funding, even though at least one alderman has so far said no way.

City officials say if approved, the money would come from Tax Increment Financing District funds the theatre is already eligible for.

The Galesburg City Council's meeting Monday night will start with a work session at 6:30 on the budget for the next calendar year -- one of several meetings expected on the matter.
