Galesburg City Council Approves Funding for Orpheum
The Orpheum Theatre in Galesburg has its biggest contributor to date toward its efforts to raise matching funds in support of a federal economic stimulus grant being applied for.

Aldermen voted five-to-two Monday night, with one alderman absent, to give the Orpheum $100,000 in funds from the Tax Increment Financing District they're in, if they're successful in obtaining the rest of the $500,000 in matching funds, and the $500,000 "Save America's Treasures" grant they want -- all in order to make building, heating, and cooling renovations to the nearly century-old structure.

Several residents spoke out in favor of the move -- including Orpheum volunteer Naomi Law -- who says sure, she's biased, and no she wasn't asked to speak, but she has good reason to be in favor of the move.

"Someone asked 'How does Galesburg compare to other communities and their theatres?'" Law said. "Well, I'm biased, but there's really no comparison. I have not seen another city about the size of Galesburg that brings the quality of the arts, the quality of the community, to the theatre the way we do."

Of the two aldermen who voted against the funding, Sixth Ward Alderman Wayne Allen did not comment, and First Ward Aldermen Ken Goad said he thought it would set a bad precedent.

Aldermen Monday night voted to accept a nearly one-million dollar bid from Canton-based Leander Construction for the building of flood protection measures at the city's new water treatment plant at Oquawka -- that would be paid with a state loan partially repaid by the federal government.

They also okayed $144,000 for more new radio-readable water meters, and cleared almost $100,000 for a new irrigation system for the tees and greens at Bunker Links golf course.
