Small Enrollment Decrease in Abingdon Schools
The number of students in Abingdon District 217 is down this year compared to last year, but not by much.

The Abingdon School Board Wednesday night heard from Superintendent Dr. Tami Roskamp, who discussed the district's official sixth-day enrollment numbers. The biggest drop-off, 11 students, occurred at the high school.

Roskamp says the total for this school year will likely go up.

"Our enrollment is staying steady, at 743," Roskamp said. "Last year, we had a boost of 756. As soon as our sixth day enrollment came out, we got, like, three new students at the middle school. We're probably at the upper (740's)...we'll have a better number on the 30th...but we are staying steady around 740."

Enrollment at the middle school is up this year at 179, five more students than last year. Both the high school and Hedding Grade School saw sixth-day enrollment declines. High school principal Chad Cox says his building has 250 students, down 11 from last year. Hedding principal Michelle Andrews says prior to Pre-Kindergarten starting today, 314 students were enrolled. That's a decrease of 7. However, the addition of 40 Pre-K students brings the overall number up to 354 compared to last year's ending total of 343.

This numbers at this point of the school year reflect an overall decrease of just 13 students versus last year's enrollment. But officials are encouraged because enrollment is still higher than the 2005-06 and 2006-07 school years.
