Man Sentenced to Prison for Strangling Mother
PEORIA, Ill. (AP) _ A Peoria man has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to strangling his mother last summer.

After entering his plea to first-degree murder Friday, 21-year-old John Finnegan was sentenced to 22 years in prison.

The plea is a legal distinction that will allow Finnegan to get treatment while in prison. It will not have any effect on the length of his sentence.

Prosecutors say 43-year-old Mary Finnegan was found dead July 24, 2008, when another son, stopped by her house and found her naked and wrapped in bedding.

State law requires Finnegan to serve 100 percent of his sentence, meaning he will be about 42 years old when he gets out of prison, given a year already served in the Peoria County Jail.
