Local Representative at Farm Progress Show
A Warren County man who runs a statewide farming organization says his group is taking a cautious stand on what he believes is an important national issue.

Rob Elliot of Cameron is president of the Illinois Corn Growers Association, and is among those attending the Farm Progress Show in Decatur that started Tuesday. Elliott was asked about whether or not the upcoming fall season would be important for the discussion of so-called "cap and trade" legislation that's supposed to reduce carbon emissions into the air.

Elliot tells WGIL he believes that will be the case, but that the Corn Growers aren't yet ready to take the hard stance some of their counterparts are. "We've kind of taken the stance of neutrality, to the point where we want to observe and see where this thing is going," Elliot said. "(We want to) have a seat at the table and if there is an eventual outcome, that we come up with something as a result of the Senate deal. Don't know where it's going to land, but we've got concerns like everybody else."

Groups like the Illinois Farm Bureau and others have decried the legislation, saying it's harmful to agriculture.

But Elliot says there are also other issues that farmers are concerned about, many of which relate to either land use or how some claim every extra acre of corn planted for ethanol results in a dead acre of rainforest -- something he calls "flawed science."
