Group Says Energy Bill Also Economical
An environmental group says the energy and climate change bill will create jobs and save money, and that making it stronger will create more jobs and save more money.

The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (Waxman-Markey), which has passed the U.S. House and is pending in the Senate, would create 20,000 jobs in Illinois and save the average household $193 a year, according to Environment Illinois. Requiring utility companies to reduce energy usage and requiring energy efficiency improvements would boost net job creation to 30,400 and yearly household savings to $252, according to the report Energy Efficiency in the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009: Impacts of Current Provisions and Opportunities to Enhance the Legislation, authored by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy and released by Environment Illinois.

"Energy efficiency is the cleanest, quickest, cheapest way of reducing our energy use and pollution," says organizer Brian Spranger. "Common-sense solutions will put cash in our pockets, and help protect the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the future of the planet."

The bill, however, is likely to displace jobs in the coal industry.
