Galesburg Library Board Contemplates Former Hotel Site
A property the City of Galesburg has been going through demolition proceedings on might just end up being the ideal location for the Galesburg Public Library.

Library Director Pam Van Kirk says the one main site the board is now looking at is the former Super 8 motel on West Main Street, in part, at the urging of the library's architect.

Van Kirk tells WGIL's "Galesburg Live" as of right now, the Super 8 site is the only option that seems feasible.

"Which would kind of be the gateway into the town square as well as (being) located near what will be the overpass going over the railroad tracks...it'll also give the library, again, a Main Street presence remaining within the downtown area."

Van Kirk is referring to the first of three planned railroad grade separations in the works for the city. She says the other downtown property that was in consideration, the former O.T. Johnson property, is too small, while the former EconoFoods site on East Main Street that was being looked at was too big.

Van Kirk hopes to have another presentation for the Galesburg Public Library Board of Trustees in October.
