Economy Doesn't Affect "Art in the Park," Exhibitors' Spirits
An annual event showcasing art and artisans of all types nearly 25-years in the making was a good draw in downtown Galesburg.

The 23rd annual "Art in the Park" took over Galesburg's Standish Park Saturday. Work ranging from paintings and jewelry to designed t-shirts and costumes were all on display and for sale, from nearly 50 different participants, with a special area set aside for almost 40 junior high-to-college-age artists.

Many visitors to the festival might have considered just doing a little window-shopping over actual buying, though, given the downturn in the economy. George Bedeian of Blue Grass, Iowa was selling hand-made jewelry with his wife and daughter, and tells WGIL people are still buying.

"The items that we make, maybe, have shifted a little bit, maybe, toward a little bit lesser expensive items," Bedeian said. "But we still have the higher-end items, and those people still buy those. But...everything is a little bit slow right now."

Cindy and Kirby Pringle of a small town near Champaign were selling a unique product: photographs of dogs posed in human costumes and situations. Cindy Pringle tells WGIL while people love their work, they've seen a bit of a slowdown, too. "We have seen it in the other art fairs that we have done," Pringle said. "We have noticed a little. I think people are a little more careful with their money."

Pringle says she and her husband love what they so much that they don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Both Bedeian and Pringle say they've weathered economic storms before, and they think they'll do just fine through this one, too.

"Art in the Park" is put on annually by the Galesburg Civic Art Center.
