Black Earth Film Festival Starts Thursday
The Sixth annual Black Earth Film Festival will take place September 17-19, 2009. The festival features independent films and is presented by the Galesburg Civic Art Center.

The festival begins on Thursday, September 17th at The Box, 306 1/2 E. Simmons St. in Galesburg at 7:00pm. This session will feature a number of films including the documentary "Atom Smashers" which chronicles the search for the Higgs boson: a yet-undiscovered subatomic particle that could explain how matter – and therefore life - can exist. To find this "god particle", top physicists at Fermilab use the Tevatron, a four-mile-long, forty-year-old particle accelerator buried beneath the Illinois prairie.

On Friday, September 18th the festival continues at The Box starting at 7:00pm. The evening will feature a French film inspired by The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe and a documentary about the Zombeatles, a band made up of Beatle-inspired zombies.

On Saturday, September 19th the Carl Sandburg Historic Site (313 E. Third St. in Galesburg) will host an afternoon session of films starting at 1:00pm in the barn located behind the Visitor's Center. Film subjects range from the origin of baseball hand signals, to life after prison, to the possible cause of autism. The festival concludes that evening with the last session starting at 7:00pm. This session will be outside in the garden/lawn area at the Carl Sandburg Historic Site where attendees are encouraged to picnic while enjoying the films. This last evening of films include two local productions, a comedy feature and a delightful short filmed in southern Illinois. Budde's will be on site selling pizza for this event.

Individual sessions are $10.00 per person. A whole festival pass is available for $25.00 per person.
