Disaster Assistance Available to Some Farmers
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Farmers in 58 Illinois counties will be eligible for federal disaster assistance because of excessive rain and flooding.

Gov. Pat Quinn on Sunday announced the assistance from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which has designated the counties as natural disaster areas. Under that designation, farmers can apply for help, including low-interest emergency loans.

According to Quinn's office, this April through July was the ninth wettest on record in Illinois. The Illinois field office of the National Agricultural Statistics Service says the wet conditions forced farmers to abandon about 100,000 acres or 17.9 million bushels of corn.

Quinn's office said farmers looking for assistance should contact their local Farm Service Agency office.

Of area counties in the WGIL Listening Area, only Mercer County is listed as eligible. Knox and Warren Counties are not.
