| Knox County Flu Vaccine Shipment Delayed |
POSTED 10:58 a-m 9/15/9 The Knox County Health Department is still waiting for delivery of its remaining seasonal flu vaccine order.
Local health officials cite information from vaccine manufacturers that indicates the companies are experiencing difficulties distributing the vaccine across the United States.
Following direction from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), the local health department began seasonal flu shot clinics soon after receiving its initial shipment of vaccine. "At that time there was no indication from the manufacturers that there would be any delay in receiving the remainder of our order," reported Michele Fishburn, Director of Community Health Improvement for the Health Department. "Subsequently, we took action to begin flu shot clinics early in the season in order to ensure the best possible protection for the community."
Department staff have no information at this time as to when the department expects to receive the remaining doses of seasonal flu vaccine that was ordered earlier this year.
Knox County residents are encouraged to utilize other local resources whenever possible to receive their flu shot. "We are still early in the flu season," noted Fishburn, "there is still plenty of time for individuals to receive a flu shot and for it to be effective; however, those who have specific health care concerns should contact their physician."
People should continue to consciously practice preventative measures while waiting for both the seasonal and H1N1 flu shots to become available to them: cover your nose and mouth when coughing, wash your hands frequently and contain spread of the flu virus by staying home when you are ill.
