Comptroller Suspends Payment on Some State Contracts
Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes wants Gov. Pat Quinn -- his political rival -- to scale back or cancel a bundle of state contracts -- so much so that Hynes is suspending the payments. But it doesn't look like Quinn will budge.

Hynes has sent a letter to Quinn, asking the governor to review $53 million worth of contracts, which are mostly for lottery and tourism advertising and promotion. Hynes' spokeswoman, Carol Knowles, says Hynes sent a similar letter in February about $1.4 billion in contracts, but got no response.

Governor's spokesman Bob Reed decried the move. He says Quinn is already cutting about $2 billion from the budget, and refuses to "hack away at legitimate revenue generators such as the lottery and tourism." Reed says the state would lose more if it cut back on these money-makers.

Knowles insists that this is not a political stunt, saying Hynes has been suggesting ways to cut for years.
