Health Department Officials Suspend Flu Vaccine Clinic
Officials at the Knox County Health Department says they've effectively put their adult seasonal flu shot program on hold after they've learned that they won't be getting the rest of their vaccine order for awhile.

Community Health Improvement Director Michele Fishburn says she heard Tuesday from the state health department that manufacturers are reporting delays in getting the regular flu vaccine shipped out -- this, after the state urged health departments to start their flu shot clinics as soon as they started receiving their orders.

Fishburn tells WGIL you'd think this wouldn't be a problem this year, given the increased awareness of the need for flu shots amid concern over the H1N1 virus.

"It's very frustrating to us, as I'm sure it is the other physicians' offices in town, and anybody who is distributing vaccine," Fishburn said. "And then you wonder, why does one distributor have it, and is getting it out, and one isn't. It's very frustrating, especially...given we've been hearing this big push to get it out. So, we're dealing with it as best as we can."

Fishburn says for now, she's directing anyone coming into the health department seeking a seasonal flu shot to go to either their regular doctor or some other provider, as there is no timetable yet for when the remaining vaccines will arrive.

She does say, however, a flu vaccine clinic for children is still going on, as doses of kids' flu vaccine remain available.
