Corrections Chief Unveils Plan for Supermax Prison
CHICAGO (AP) -- An activist group is praising some parts of a reform plan for the state's lone supermax prison, but Tamms Year Ten also says the plan doesn't go far enough.

Illinois Department of Corrections Michael Randle unveiled his plan Thursday for Tamms Correctional Center. It includes more mental health evaluation, incentives for good behavior and the transfer of 45 inmates.

Tamms has been criticized by human rights groups and in lawsuits as abusive. Say some inmates have been held in solitary confinement for more than 10 years, and that mentally ill inmates are wrongly sent there.

A Tamms Year Ten spokeswoman says it looks like the Illinois Department of Corrections is headed in a new direction with Tamms, but the plan doesn't fully address alleged issues with mentally ill inmates.
