Monmouth College President Talks Vision, Enrollment and Retention at Luncheon
The President of Monmouth College is pleased with what's happening on campus this school year, but he says there is room for improvement in the future.

Mauri Ditzler spoke Thursday at this year's first Monmouth Associates Luncheon. He says the college's trustees have prepared a new vision statement for the school, which includes targeting not only the valedictorians but other students as well.

Ditzler says the college will always be a residential liberal arts school, a type of school he says has seen numbers dwindle to just two or three percent of students attending. Ditzler says students at Monmouth College are being taught to use what they learn on campus to their advantage.

"I believe in the value of every form of education. But I also believe if we're only educating 2 percent or 3 percent of the students, this country needs young people who know how to bring knowledge together. And at Monmouth we use the word integrated learning or integrated knowledge."

Ditzler also talked about how the school will evolve into a learning-focused institution. He says he wants students to participate more in what he calls educationally meaningful activities, like speaking to instructors and other students about a class or other topics, and learning from fellow students and instructors with different backgrounds.

Ditzler says he's pleased with the record number of students enrolled at the college despite the economic recession, and without officials having to lower admissions standards. He says fewer students flunked out of school, and Monmouth College's retention rate of freshman students has gone up from 73 percent last year to 77 percent this year.
