| Knoxville School Board Hears Another Proposal for All-Weather Track at KHS |
It's been about three years since the Knoxville School District discussed having an all-weather track, but a parent and former school board member is bringing it back again. Shane Larson told the District-202 Board earlier this week that he wants the board to consider moving forward with the building of an all-weather track so the district could finally have a track good enough to both practice on, and, especially, host home meets on. Unlike an effort four years ago that ended up focusing on 12 acres of land on Gilson Street the district owns but doesn't use, Larson says this time he wants the board to focus on where the current track is at the high school.
"If you go across the road you're going to have some additional expense there that you won't have here. You're going to have a parking lot over there, you're going to have concession stands, locker rooms, you're going to have to run water, run sewer. There are a lot of expenses over there that you won't have here. It is doable."
But, Larson says it will be a tight fit, given where the current football stadium is and where buildings are in proximity to do it. He says he's already secured the services of volunteer union labor and some other things, but it would still cost a half-million dollar to build the track. He says he'd like to either use district money toward that effort, or start fundraising as soon as possible. Building could take under a year, and could be done in time for football season. The District-202 Board has not yet considered the request. |
