New State Fire Marshal Appointed
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Gov. Pat Quinn has named a veteran firefighter as acting Illinois State Fire Marshal.

Dave DeFraties, a 21-year veteran of the Springfield Fire Department who has been with the state agency since 2005, replaces David Foreman, who is retiring.

DeFraties had been the fire marshal's chief of staff. He also served as interim state fire marshal from October 2005 to February 2006, after fire marshal J.T. Somer resigned for personal reasons.

The fire marshal's office provides arson investigations; fire-prevention, boiler and pressure vessel, and elevator safety; and personnel standards and education for Illinois firefighters.

The office aims to reduce death, injury and property loss from fires and explosions.
