Voluntary Employee Separations Before Galesburg City Council
The Galesburg City Council will consider a proposal aldermen only heard about for the first time two weeks ago during the first of several work sessions on the city budget.

Aldermen Monday night will vote on a resolution supporting a voluntary separation program for all interested city employees - one city manager Dane Bragg said two weeks ago he hopes will save the city $250,000.

Bragg told aldermen at their first budget work session if his numbers are correct, there should be plenty of interest in city employees leaving their jobs.

"We surveyed our employees and we have about 15 percent of our employees strongly interested in some kind of voluntary separation incentive. Now, does that mean they're gonna take it? Not necessarily because we haven't shown any incentive yet."

Bragg says of those surveyed, 32 of the city's 250 employees indicated they would be "likely" or "very likely" to take such an incentive, and of those, 12 each come from the Public Works and Police departments.

He says those who take the option would be eligible for up to 12 weeks of severance pay plus any forms of comp time they're owed, and some form of health insurance for a period based on retirement eligibility.

The Galesburg City Council meets at 6:00 for a budget work session dealing with capital projects. The regular meeting follows at 7:30.
