Knoxville City Council Approves Police Radio Purchases
The Knoxville City Council decided to move forward and purchase new radios for squad cars and officers as a way to save the city money in the future.

Knoxville Police Chief Ron Poyner brought to the council Monday night, the option to purchase a number of Starcom radios for the police station and officers. Poyner says the radios provide easier ways for more than one law enforcement agency to be on a channel at one time in case of a natural disaster or an area emergency.

The overall cost for the Starcom radios and docking stations needed could be more. Poyner says the cost is only 20 percent of the total cost and that the remaining 80 percent is being picked up by a grant they are eligible to receive. Poyner says if they don't act now, the cost of the equipment rises from just over $1,300, to over $6,600 each.

Poyner told the council they invested in one of the radios last year but the offer is too good to refuse now. "Since then, the cost per unit has gone down several thousand dollars through grant negotiations," Poyner said.

Poyner says the new radios will go into the police cars, and allow the Chief of Police to always have a radio so they can be in communication as quickly as possible with emergency responders.

Poyner says the cost to purchase and place the Starcom Radios in cars will be just under $4,000 plus a user fee.

He says the user fee is included into the cost of the radios for the first year.
