USDA Gives Funding for Mississippi River Conservation Efforts
WASHINGTON (AP) -- U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack is launching a new initiative to improve water quality and the overall health of the Mississippi River Basin.

Vilsack Thursday announced the creation of the Mississippi River Basin Healthy Watersheds Initiative.

The region will get a $320 million boost from the Agriculture Department, and Ag Department officials say the money will go toward efforts to help the 2,350-mile long Mississippi River.

Over four years, the funding will be used to improve water quality and remove pollutants.

The project involves 12 states that are either along the Mississippi River or have tributaries that feed into it. Those states are Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
