New Central Illinois U.S. Attorney Named
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The U.S. attorney for Illinois' central district has resigned, and his first assistant has been named to replace him.

Jeffrey Lang is acting U.S. attorney with Rodger Heaton's departure Monday. Heaton says he plans to move to private litigation practice this fall.

Lang has been first assistant since September 2007 and was named supervisor of the district's Rock Island office in February 2002. He's been a federal prosecutor since 1991, starting as an assistant in the southern district of Florida and moving to central Illinois in 1995.

Heaton became U.S. attorney in December 2005, and the Senate confirmed his nomination by then-President George W. Bush in September 2006.

The central district encompasses 46 counties, including Knox County.
