Illinois Continues Effort to Curb Iran's Nuclear Threat
As crowds rallied in New York in protest of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's appearance before the U.N., lawmakers in Illinois revealed results from the state’s efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear threat.

A law passed by the state in 2007 called for the divestment of state pension funds from foreign companies doing business with Iran's energy industry. State Sen. Jeffrey Schoenberg (D-Evanston) says so far, $133 million has been divested. Schoenberg sponsored the bill along with State Rep. Lou Lang (D-Skokie).

"It is up to us to use whatever economic leverage we have to stand up to this morally bankrupt regime," Schoenberg said in Chicago. "As long as the Iranian leadership continues to pursue nuclear weapons in the defiance of international law, we are compelled to withhold out public investments in this rogue country."

When passed, the law was the second of its kind in the nation, but was the first to require all foreign firms doing business with the state, regardless of industry, to disclose any ties with Iran's energy sector.
