'Jordbruksdagarna' Features Family Activities
Demonstrations, performances, food, music, dance and games will all be part of a festival beginning this weekend that highlights Swedish heritage. The 38th annual Jordbruksdagarna autumn festival will take place this weekend from 10am until 5pm at the Bishop Hill State Historical Site in Henry County.

Bishop Hill State Historic Site Superintendent Martha Downey says the festival will host a variety of craft demonstrations including wheel spinning, weaving, rope making and wood carving. The event will also have a number of hands on activities including corn husk doll making, corn shelling, and cider pressing.

Downey tells WGIL the cider press is along the lines of today's juicers but it's big enough not to fit on your kitchen counter. "Basically, you throw the whole apples in and it grinds them up," Downey said. "Then, there's this disc-like thing that is on a large screw, and you screw it down and it presses out the juices from the apples, and that becomes apple cider."

Downey also said another highlight to the weekend events will be a vintage baseball game Saturday afternoon between the hometown Bishop Hill Ox Boys and the Rock Springs Ground Squirrels where some older rules will be in place. The players in the game will be fined 25-cents for spitting, swearing, or sweating among other things.

She says she enjoys seeing children of all ages enjoying the many activities the festival features.
