Quinn Talks About MAP Grant Funding at NIU
Gov. Pat Quinn was in DeKalb Friday to rally student support for MAP grants.

Speaking on the campus of Northern Illinois University, Quinn encouraged students to visit a website where they could share their concerns with state lawmakers.

NIU president John Peters says MAP grants are crucial not only to students at NIU but to students across the state. "The elimination of MAP funding is devastating for almost 150,000 students in Illinois who rely on MAP funding to pay for their college tuition," Peters said.

The governor plans another rally in Chicago on Tuesday and invited students across the state to come to a rally in Springfield on Oct. 15.

So far there have been only two suggestions on how to raise money for the grant program, which was only half funded at the beginning of the fiscal year. One idea would raise the cigarette tax, while the other would offer a tax amnesty with that revenue used for the program.
