Durbin Says Iran Is Eager To Develop Nuclear Weapons
Iran has informed the United Nations that it has been building a previously undisclosed uranium enrichment plant. This is a problem, says U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.).

President Obama, speaking with French President Nicolas Sarkozy and United Kingdom Prime Minister Gordon Brown at his side, said the plant is a "direct challenge" to global nonproliferation.

Durbin calls this a revolting development by Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. "Ahmadinejhad comes to the United Nations and says 'just give us a little bit of uranium so we can develop medical technologies," Durbin says. "That sounds so harmless. Then it turns out he has a secret facility that is developing weaponry that could threaten the stability of the Middle East and the world."

Durbin says Obama has offered to talk with Iran over its nuclear program, but there have been no signs of cooperation. Durbin says he supports the leaders who warned of new sanctions if Iran does not open the facility to international inspectors by December.

The CIA believes the site in question could not be operational before 2010.
