Solutions Sought For MAP Grant Funding
A state lawmaker says everyone realizes funding for MAP grants for college students' tuition is a priority.

State Rep. Lou Lang (D-Skokie) says it's nice to see lawmakers concerned about the lack of funds that could force thousands of college students to drop out, but says real solutions are needed.

When asked about a proposal by House Republicans that would use money from a one and a half tax amnesty in order to fund MAP grants, Lang says the money has to be there in full and has to get to kids on time. The state needs about $180 million.

"The students need to know before the semester starts whether they're gonna have the money," Lang said. "It would only work if we guarantee to the students the money before we get the money."

Under the tax amnesty, those who are delinquent in income tax or sales tax would be permitted to come clean and pay the tax they owe, without interest or penalties. Past amnesty programs have excluded taxpayers against whom enforcement or collection were already initiated by the state.

Another idea that has been floated by Gov. Pat Quinn is an increase in the cigarette tax. Both Quinn and Lang, and assistant House majority leader, expect the issue to be one of the first things lawmakers take up when they return to Springfield for the fall Veto Session.
