| FIRST ON WGIL: Aldermen Approve Changes to Galesburg Water Plant Construction |
FIRST REPORTED 6:00am 9/29/09 The Galesburg City Council has given the go-ahead to essentially move what will be the main transmission line for the city's new water treatment plant. Aldermen during a special meeting Monday night approved four change orders to the construction of the city's new water plant at Oquawka, one of which is the essential move of the transmission line connecting the water system to the new plant on to property that project engineer Steve Bruner says is on higher ground. Bruner says the move is costing $400,000, but is crucial thanks to last year's flooding along the Mississippi River. "The flood of 2008 and the fact that Henderson County Drainage District #3 is no longer in operation and pumping the groundwater levels down, we have higher groundwater levels than pre-construction," Bruner said.
He says the soil has become very unstable where the city has to hook on and will require some sheet piling to protect the water transmission main to Galesburg that the city has to tie into.
Bruner says most of that cost is due to the sheet piling, which is primarily made of steel. Other change orders aldermen approved included moving some air duct lines, meters, and an air-cooled condensing unit Aldermen Monday night also approved spending $50,000 on two property easements needed for the water line move. Several aldermen expressed concern over what amounts to a two-percent increase in an almost $20-million project, but Bruner says two percent is in line with what's typical with most construction projects. |
