Packed Meeting on Chemical Drift
An Illinois Senate committee hearing on chemical drift turned out to be a packed-house event. The Illinois Senate Agricultural and Conservation Committee called a special meeting at the request of State Sen. Dave Koehler (D-Peoria), who says he kept hearing complaints.

Farmers and chemical company executives say the chemicals are safe, and that too many complaints have been investigated and dismissed because there is no evidence of chemicals on other people's farms or crops. But vintner Bob Hall of Arbor Hill Vineyards in Galena says chemical drift has hurt several grape crops across the state, saying chemical drift can cause thousands of dollars in lost crops.

Another alternative crop grower, Janet Morse of the Trail's End Organic Farm in Putnam, says she doesn't see the need for new laws, or even for the committee hearing. She says if farmers would simply notify all neighbors about spraying, and work with alternative crop growers, the problem would likely be solved.
